We’ve been in business for over 90 years, and one of the most common questions we’re asked is, “How Should I Clean a Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket?” Read below to find out.

A Brief History of the Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket

The Hudson’s Bay Company first introduced its Point Blanket in the late 1700s after an entrepreneurial trader Germain Maugenest suggested the company stock wool blankets alongside its popular fur pelts. Today, HBC’s Point Blanket colours of red, yellow, green, and indigo are synonymous with The Hudson’s Bay Company – though they actually have no real meaning! Today, Hudson’s Bay uses the iconic blanket as inspiration for their Heritage Collection which can now be found on dishware, iPhone cases, and much more. Point blankets are known as collectors’ items and “investment pieces” and can range from $350 to $1000, so it makes sense one would want to care for their blanket using a responsible cleaning method.

How to Clean and Care for Your Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket

While Hudson’s Bay offers washing instructions on its website, it recommends customers seek the assistance of a reputable dry cleaner rather than use a DIY approach. Wool is anti-bacterial by nature, so there’s no need to clean a point blanket too often. That said, if you purchase your blanket at a vintage or second-hand store, take it to the dry cleaner in case there are any insect remnants or invisible stains. You should maintain your blanket’s integrity by brushing it with a wool brush regularly to remove dirt and debris. For any spills and stains, dab the soiled area with a wet clean cloth and then bring your blanket to your favourite dry cleaner (Gibson’s) at your earliest convenience.

Repairing Your Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket

Good news – the nature of the Point Blanket’s tight weave makes it less likely to fray. However, if your blanket does start to unravel, look for a professional tailor or invisible mending service to prevent further fraying or unravelling. We recommend Cheeseworths. Invisible mending is not inexpensive, so ask for a quote before your proceed!

Storing Your Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket

Store your blanket after it’s been professionally cleaned in a cool and dry place, like a cedar chest or closet. Alternatively, you can wrap your blanket in a clean sheet or store it in a cotton pillowcase. Make sure to remove your blanket from any plastic packaging or cramped spaces.
