Bill Cunningham once said, “fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.” With this in mind, we’re thrilled to introduce a new series – “The Stories Behind Our Clothes.” Our clothes tell a unique story, and with over 90 years of experience cleaning clothes, we’ve heard some pretty special ones. And now, we want to share them with you. The Stories Behind Our Clothes focuses on a Gibson’s customer who has shared the story behind the item they are getting cleaned. For our inaugural post, we’re excited to share the story of Amma Kwatemaa’s and the white dress she wore to her own celebration of life, after beating cancer!

Can you tell us why you bought this dress?
I had this dress specially made to celebrate my journey of beating cancer. I wore it for a church service.
Where is it from? Can you share more about the experience purchasing it, how did you feel?
I selected the lace on the dress from Italy and had a seamstress design and make it here in Toronto. I decided to go with the colour white because to me it signifies healing and strength.
How does this dress make you feel?
This dress makes me feel thankful, happy and elegant. I’m so grateful that I had my friends and family around me to celebrate my recovery in such a difficult time in my life.
In one word what does this dress represent? Symbolize?
SURVIVAL
Is there anything we missed or didn’t ask that you’d like to share?
The outfit meant more to me than just a white dress and church service. I overcame a head on collision 6 months prior to the cancer that left me permanently disabled and depressed. Having my family and friends come together to celebrate the gift of life was something never thought possible.
Why take it to Gibson’s versus another dry cleaner?
My experience over the years with Gibson’s has always been good. When the time came to get my dress cleaned, Gibson’s immediately came to mind. I went to the Brampton location first, but had been told it was closed. One day when my daughter came over, I asked her if the Gibson’s Cleaners on Dundas was still open. I gave my daughter the dress and she brought it to the Kingsway location.
