Your bed is a sanctuary. In fact, researchers estimate the average person will spend 33 years of their lifetime in bed – perhaps more during COVID. Over the next few weeks, our blog, “Let’s Talk Textilecare” will focus on how to clean and care for different household and bedding products. This marks the first of the series, which focuses on how to clean down duvets.
Washing Your Down Duvet
Luxury bedding companies like Au Lit Fine Linens recommend to clean down bedding products every two to three months. If you’re planning to wash your duvet at home, first check the care label to ensure it’s not dry clean only. Machine washable duvets should be washed in cold or lukewarm water with a gentle liquid detergent – remember less is always more. At Gibson’s we’ve made a conscious decision to clean home care products with greener alternatives and encourage you to do the same at home. Avoid using cleaning products with bleaching agents, ammonia, or enzymes that could cause discolouration. Refrain from using fabric softener as this leaves a coating on the down that prevents it from drying properly.
Drying Your Down Duvet
Drying your down duvet at home requires time and attention. Duvets should be dried in a tumble-dryer on a low heat setting. Take out your duvet and refluff it to two to three times throughout the dry cycle. This will prevent the down from clumping together. Make sure your duvet is completely dry before putting it back on your bed. Expect it to take three to four hours to dry your down duvet completely.
Storing Your Down Duvet
Ensure your duvets are clean and completely dry before storing. You should store your duvet in a light cotton bedding bag in a cool, dry, and well vented area.
