Spring cleaning is here and it’s time to declutter our closets. Cleaning out your closet results in a lot of “orphan” garments or clothes that may need a new home. Here’s our top tips on where to re-homing your clothes.
Gibson’s Cleaners – Dress for Success Toronto
Gibson’s has worked with Dress for Success Toronto since 2019 to collect donations in support of its Suiting Program. The Suiting program provides professional attire and styling advice to women who are actively trying to re-enter the workforce. The program is much more than just an outfit, as it can truly be a transformative experience. During the course of the Suiting Program a Client receives both the clothing to dress for success, as well as the support and encouragement from the Dress for Success team of boutique volunteers to believe in themself. You can bring your donations to one of our Gibson’s locations. Please ensure your donations are boxed or bagged.
Consider Consignment Stores
It can be hard to part with expensive or designer items you no longer need or wear. Rather than donating them to a charitable organization, consider a consignment store. Poshmark, the clothes selling app, also makes it easy to sell clothes from the comfort of your home. Simply snap a few photos and list your clothes online. When they sell, Poshmark will send you a shipping label. Tip: Make sure to clean your items beforehand!
Make What’s Old New Again
Alterations and clothing modifications can extend the life of your clothes. Before donating or selling items, consider how you might upcycle them. Pick a weekend to go hunting for vintage or unique buttons to get resewn on an old blazer or consider hemming a dress to a new length. Tapering your pants to a skinnier style works too. At Gibson’s, we’re lucky to have one of the best seamstresses in the city. Schedule your appointment with her here.
Whether your have mountains of clothes without a home or one or two pieces, we hope these suggestions give you a few ideas of what you can do with the clothes you no longer wear!
