Our Favourite Spring Cleaning Hacks

Spring is here and that means it's time to spring clean. Whether you're swapping your winter wardrobe out for spring styles or putting your boots away for the season, we've put together these simple spring cleaning closet tips.

Protect Your Clothes from Critters

Before storing your winter items away for the summer, make sure all your clothes are clean and free of any stains, salt, perfume and deodorants. Did you know that untreated stains attract insects and lead to those pesky moth holes? You would never put a dirty dish back in your china cabinet after a dinner party, so why hang a dirty sweater back in your closet? This time of year, it is essential to dry clean or launder your clothing before putting them away. Delicate fabrics like silk, wool and cashmere should be cleaned as per the garment care label.

Take Care of Your Delicates

Delicate items, made of natural fibres, should always be stored in a breathable container such as a cotton storage bin. Wrap items in acid-free tissue paper and stack them loosely into the box. Cedar balls or sachet are also a good idea when storing delicate items; pests love nothing more than to get cosy in natural fibres, and cedar is a great way to keep them away.

Remove Plastic - It's Smothering

Similar to your skin, you need to let your clothes breathe. Dry cleaning plastic is great protection for short periods of time, but for seasonal storage, remove plastic and replace with breathable cotton garment bags. Always store in a cool, dark and dry closet for best results and protection against light and humidity. Investing in good-quality hangers can be a great way to keep your investments in clothing safe too. Hanger straps in dresses and blouses reduce stress on your delicate fabrics — they are there for a reason.

Take a Trip to the Cobbler

Before storing your winter boots and shoes for the winter, consider heading to the cobbler for a good shoe shine or to fix any needed repairs. Check the zippers on your boots to ensure they're in good form and clean of any salt or dirt. Giving them a good cleaning and polish will ensure they're ready for next season.

Understandably, it can be inconvenient to bring a bulk load of clothes to the cleaners in one trip. Try our pick up and delivery service at no extra charge.
