Holiday Stains: Red Wine

During the holiday season, it’s likely wine will be flowing. But when someone spills red wine, it can quickly sober up a room. No need to fret. Red wine stain aren’t cause for alarm. The important thing is to act quickly. Here’s what to do if you spill wine on your clothes or area rug this holiday season:

How to Remove Red Wine From Your Clothes

Before treating the red wine stain, check your garment’s care label for cleaning instructions. Dry clean only clothes should always be taken to a professional. Prespot your garment by flushing the area with cold or sparkling water and then set it aside for the dry cleaner. If your garment is machine friendly – here’s what to do:

Step 1: First flush the stain with cold water or dab the stain with a clean paper towel or clean cloth.

Step 2: Next, grab some hairspray from your medicine cabinet and spray the stained area with a generous amount of product. Let it set on the stain for five to ten minutes. Blot the area with a cloth to remove any remaining colour.

Step 3: Wash the garment as per the care label on the highest temperature setting as possible. When the cycle has finished, check if the stain has been removed before drying. You can repeat Step 2 if needed.

Step 4: Dry your garment as per the care label instructions.

Insider Tip: Do not treat red wine stains with salt! Red wine is acidic and contains tannins which can set the stain into your clothes for good.
